Smart home accessories specialist Aqara has launched the first presence sensor for HomeKit that uses millimeter wave radar to detect people. Additionally, the hardware is compatible with Alexa, Google Home, and other smart home systems. The device does not require a camera that could compromise data privacy and is more accurate than sensors based on infrared technology. With the Presense Sensor FP2, rooms can be divided into 30 zones in a maximum of 320 “cells”. The sensor can distinguish up to five people as long as the room size does not exceed 40 square meters. The system makes it possible to switch HomeKit devices by entering a specified area of the room.
The Presense Sensor FP2 uses radar frequencies in the millimeter wave range to detect the smallest movements accurately and with maximum privacy. The manufacturer ensures that there will be no misidentifications. The multi-zone presence can be recognized via HomeKit, and a light sensor can be addressed using IFTTT or Aqara’s own smart home technology accessible through the app. In addition, there is fall detection to detect possible accidents by radar. At present, this feature doesn’t seem to be available via HomeKit.
The Presense Sensor FP2, which is now available in Germany and costs almost €100, is a costly investment compared to other motion detectors with simpler technology. However, the Presense Sensor FP2’s unique features include a division of up to 30 zones, making it possible to control options on a new level. Notably, the presence sensor requires a constant cable connection via USB-C, but it can be placed anywhere on a table or shelf, not necessarily on the ceiling. The device requires a hub to integrate it into HomeKit, which must also be purchased if it is not already available from the Chinese manufacturer, Aqara.
