GitLab 16.0 Unleashes Free AI-Powered Coding

GitLab 16.0 provides AI-powered coding for free

The GitLab team has released the latest update – version 16.0, of the software development platform for May. The new release has more than 55 innovations, and once again focuses on AI-supported code proposals, which reached the open beta stage in the previous release. Code suggestions, which is dubbed the AI-powered free feature, is now available for all GitLab.com users, including the free edition.

The May release also offers the Value Streams Dashboard which now provides access for all users of GitLab.com, providing strategic insights into software development lifecycle metrics which allows decision-makers to identify trends that can help them make informed decisions.

GitLab has also improved its SaaS Runners, with new runners being made available for Linux and Apple Silicon. These new runners are designed to enhance the productivity of workflows and accelerate pipelines, thus providing maximum productivity for users.

The Code Suggestions beta has become free and is more articulate and is now available for most computer programming languages: C/C++, C#, Go, Java, JavaScript, Python, PHP, Ruby, Rust, Scala, Kotlin and TypeScript. GitLab has reiterated that this feature also aims to protect the security of entered source code within GitLab’s enterprise cloud infrastructure and not use it in the form of training data, along with more details provided on the same.

The new release follows semantic versioning, as such version 16.0 is considered a major release and corresponds to the GitLab release cycle. According to this cycle, a new major release appears every year in May. Every month, a new minor version is released, while patch updates are released as needed.

Overall, GitLab 16.0 offers developers a complete AI-powered coding experience, supporting different computer programming languages, with multiple features that will help to enhance the productivity of workflows and accelerate pipelines.
