Compact Notebooks: A Solution for Every Need
Compact notebooks have come a long way since they were called subnotebooks or ultrabooks. With models ranging from 960 grams to 1.6 kilograms, these little powerhouses are perfect for those who need a device that is easy to carry around without sacrificing performance.
In a recent podcast, the team at c’t tested several compact notebooks and gave tips on running times, display types, and equipment. The models they tested have larger displays, around 14 inches, than older models. This is due to narrower display frames, and the screens come in different types with some having an OLED panel, some having a matte finish, and some having touch. Some even come with a stylus.
These notebooks also have excellent battery life, with some models lasting up to 25 hours on a single charge. All of them charge via USB-C, and they can stop charging at less than 100 percent to save the battery.
The processors used in the current generation of compact notebooks are the thirteenth Core i generation, with the HP model still using its predecessor. The differences in the CPUs, the cooling systems, and the resulting speeds are explained in the podcast. Unfortunately, notebooks with the current AMD generation were not yet available during testing.
Models tested by c’t included Acer Swift Go 14, Asus ZenBook 14X, HP Dragonfly Folio G3, Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Carbon, LG Gram 14, MSI Summit E14 Flip, and Samsung Galaxy Book3 Pro 14.
In addition to the compact notebooks, the podcast also discusses docking stations and the Google Pixel 7a smartphone. The complete uplink Episode 48.4 is available on YouTube, with c’t 13/2023 available at kiosks, in browsers, and in the c’t app for iOS and Android.
Compact notebooks are an excellent solution for those who need a device that offers portability without sacrificing performance. With so many models available, there is sure to be one that fits your needs.
