Book Review: Blender and Godot for Game Development

Buchrezension: Game Development with Blender and Godot

Packt has released a new textbook, “Game Development with Blender and Godot” by Kumsal Obuz, which caters to the needs of developers oriented towards 3D games. Obuz demonstrates the use of Blender by modeling a beer keg in the first chapter and introduces colors, materials, textures and dynamically generated textures in the following sections. He also explains how to make a scene in Blender responsive to Godot.

The book also covers the creation of an example game called Clara’s Fortune, which starts from page 164 and begins with the creation of the actual level in Godot. It addresses the implementation of various animation and sound effects and the event bus to create a flexible architecture for the game.

Since computer games need a status screen, the textbook explains in detail the embedded GUI stack offered by Godot and setting up the status screen that pivots in the direction of using the various cameras. The last act of the tutorial is the implementation of various animation and sound effects.

The book demonstrates the various export settings in detail and also goes into detail about the beta testers who are immensely important for testing and checking the concepts. Lastly, it presents a roughly two-page list of genres in which the use of the Godot engine leads to particularly fast or impressive results.

Although a complete discussion of the engine cannot be accommodated in just 330 pages, the book serves as a guide through the jungle of beginnings and provides valuable information to beginners. In the opinion of the reviewer, this book is an excellent purchase and worth the investment.
