Callum Hudson-Odoi, who was once regarded as England’s mega talent, made a switch from Chelsea to Bayer Leverkusen last summer, hoping to restart his career after suffering from injuries. However, it turned out to be a brutal crash for the young footballer.
The 22-year-old last played on February 19, with just 45 minutes in the starting XI against Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga. After that, he was mostly on the bench or in the stands. Although the last-minute loan deal seemed like a coup for Bayer Leverkusen, it proved to be otherwise.
Despite the absence of a purchase option, Thomas Tuchel, the Chelsea coach at that time, blocked himself from getting Hudson-Odoi back. This was because Bayer Leverkusen were dealing with flank troubles, with Karim Bellarabi and Amine Adli both injured.
However, even after featuring in 20 competitive games for Bayer Leverkusen, the English international with only three international caps remains their biggest flop. With only one goal and one assist, Hudson-Odoi’s performance has been far from impressive during his tenure at Leverkusen.
Currently, the player’s contract with Chelsea runs until 2024, but he doesn’t seem to have a future with the “Blues.” The London-based club even let go of their option to bring him back home in the winter window. The situation has left Hudson-Odoi behind Florian Wirtz, Moussa Diaby, Adam Hlozek, Sardar Azmoun, Adli, and Bellarabi at Werkself.
Despite this, Simon Rolfes, Bayer Leverkusen’s sports boss, believes that Hudson-Odoi still has the potential to ignite his career. Although he has yet to show his best in Leverkusen, Rolfes hopes that the player will find his groove in the remaining matches of the season.
