Angela Merkel Takes Vacation in Eco-Friendly Style

Former Chancellor Angela Merkel flies economy class with Eurowings

Even as a former chancellor, Angela Merkel has been known for her down-to-earth attitudes. She was seen shopping at the bakery and was even robbed once despite her personal protection. So, when she and her husband Joachim Sauer returned from their vacation in Fuerteventura, Merkel was seen flying economy class with airline Eurowings.

According to reports, Merkel spent around 500 euros for her flight back to Berlin. The Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings specializes in direct flights within Europe. Photos show her wearing a dark blue FFP2 mask, seated in an ordinary window seat, and waiting for a gap in the passenger queue. Her husband was seated two seats down the aisle, and a bodyguard was positioned a few rows behind.

Merkel and Sauer spent a relaxing vacation in the Canary Islands, staying in the quiet 4-star Innside by Meliá hotel. It cost around 200 euros per night for a double room with breakfast, and the only extravagances she allowed herself were three bodyguards and a reserved table in the organic restaurant with a view of the dune landscape.

A hotel guest who saw Merkel on vacation said that she “behaved like any other tourist,” waiting patiently for her toast to come out of the treadmill toaster.

Despite being entitled to numerous advantages as a former chancellor, such as an office with nine employees, pensions of around 15,000 euros, and personal security, Merkel has never been one for star graces. This is another testament to her practical and frugal approach to life.
