Google Unveils Beta Version of Android 14

On Tuesday, Google released the beta version of its latest mobile operating system, Android 14. The announcement was briefly taken down before being re-posted. While the beta version does not introduce many new features, it does allow for easy installation on Google phones, making it useful for compatibility tests of applications.

Improvements to Data Protection and Visual Display

According to Google, Android 14 focuses on data protection and visual display. The new operating system is designed to look better on tablets and folding cell phones. Apps will have access to vector graphics paths and the ability to recognize when the user takes a screenshot. Additionally, navigation is made easier with a new back arrow.

New Authentication API for Passkeys

One of the key features of Android 14 is a new authentication API for passkeys. This feature is aimed at making authentication more secure.

Accessibility Enhancements

Google has made several enhancements to accessibility in Android 14. Font magnification has been changed to prevent fonts that are already large from being enlarged too much. Additionally, apps will be able to restrict accessibility access to sensitive content. Google has promised to monitor the correct classification of apps in the Play Store.

Other New Features

Developers will find it easier to share content to other applications with the ability to customize share sheets. A new interface allows for gendered addressing in Portuguese. Users can also choose preferred languages for individual apps. Android 14 offers new system-wide settings affecting regional customs like the desired temperature unit and number preferences.

Outdated Apps Will No Longer Be Installed

Android 14 will no longer support outdated apps. A new installation of an app will require the app to support at least API level 23 (Android 13 reached level 33). This restriction is aimed at improving security.

SDK and NDK to Be Released in June

Google plans to release the SDK Software Development Kit and the Native Development Kit in June, marking the start of the platform stability phase. Three more beta versions are planned until the final release of Android 14 in August or September.
