She was 14, he was 24. Priscilla Beaulieu and Elvis Presley met in 1959 in Bad Nauheimen, Germany, where the King was on military service. She lived a few miles away in Wiesbaden, where her father, a captain in the US Air Force, was posted. It was after meeting Currie Grant, a friend of Elvis, that she met her idol. “My parents took me to his house. […] I was very shy, not at all the type of girl to scream at a concert. He made me sit next to him and asked me lots of questions: “Do you go to school? Where?” I was so nervous, I didn’t know what to say to her. He went to the piano, started singing to put me at ease,” said Priscilla Presley in an interview with the “Huffington Post” in 2015. And to add: “A few days later, we received a call: he wanted to see me again. I didn’t understand, I was so boring.”
Nine months after the wedding, Lisa-Marie was born
A few months later, Elvis Presley completed his military service and returned to Memphis, where his many (and especially many) fans awaited him. Priscilla stayed in Germany. Without news of the King, she began a relationship with a boy of her age, Tom Stewart. But, in 1962, when Elvis called her to join him at Graceland, Priscilla abandoned her budding love to travel to Memphis. In 1966, when he was left by his girlfriend Anita Wood, Elvis Presley asked Priscilla Beaulieu, with whom he had a platonic relationship until then, in marriage. She became Priscilla Presley on May 1, 1967, during a ceremony held at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas. Nine months to the day after their union, on February 1, 1986, she gave birth to their daughter, Lisa-Marie. “Elvis Presley was a cool father, who over-spoiled our daughter. It must be said that he was often gone. It was the most difficult aspect of our life. It was I who raised our daughter,” she told the Huffington Post.
“We remained friends until his death”
After the birth of their child, Elvis and Priscilla’s relationship did not last long. In 1972, she filed for divorce, a request he took some time to accept. However, they remained close until the King died in 1977. “We remained friends until his death. We were always there for each other, it was a sweet relationship. The best compliment my daughter gave me was one day on TV: “As a child, I didn’t realize that my parents had divorced.”
