Two women journalists murdered in eastern Mexico

The double crime occurred just four days after the murder of another reporter in Sinaloa. There are eleven journalists killed in 2022.

Two journalists were shot to death this Monday (05.09.2022) in the state of Veracruz, on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, reported the state prosecutor’s office, bringing the number of such murders in the country to 11 this year.

The Veracruz State Prosecutor’s Office reported via Twitter that it was investigating the murders of Yessenia Mollinedo Falconi and Sheila Johana García Olivera, director and reporter, respectively, of the online news site El Veraz in Cosoleacaque.

The state prosecutor, Verónica Hernández, said that the investigation will be exhaustive, including the consideration of his journalistic work as a motive for his murder.

The events occurred around 3:00 p.m. local time (8:00 p.m. GMT) in the municipality of Cosoleacaque, in southern Veracruz. Reports revealed that both were inside their vehicle parked outside a convenience store.

Armed men arrived at the scene and shot them. They died as a result of their injuries.

The Ministry of Public Security reported that, in coordination with federal forces, it activated the Red Code operation.

The agency said that the security forces maintain an operation in the area to search for and locate the murderers.

If it is confirmed that the double murder is related to the journalistic practice of both communicators, there would be 11 journalists murdered in Mexico so far this year.

According to figures from the organization Article 19, since President Andrés Manuel López Obrador came to power in December 2018, there have been 1,945 attacks against the press in the country, including 33 murders, 9 so far this year, and 2 disappearances, 85% more than in the first three years of President Enrique Peña Nieto.
