Alec Baldwin’s fatal shot on a set: the investigation turns to the gunsmith and the assistant director of the film

Two days after the shooting of actor Alec Baldwin, killing director of photography Halyna Hutchins, the investigation is moving forward. And it focuses on two people. Investigators are examining the role of Hannah Gutierrez Reed, 24, the film’s armourer. According to a preliminary investigation report consulted by AFP, it was she who had prepared the firearm with which Alec Baldwin fired, a priori by accident. After the shot, Hannah Gutierrez Reed was given the weapon and collected the used cartridge, before handing them over to law enforcement officers.

The other person at the heart of the investigation is the film’s assistant director, Dave Halls. Described as an experienced professional, it was he who handed the gun to Alec Baldwin during a rehearsal of a scene from the film. He would have told her that she was “cold”, that is, not loaded with an actual bullet, in cinematic parlance. Dave halls “did not know that the weapon was loaded with live ammunition”, confirms the report.

However, neither Dave Halls nor Hannah Gutierrez Reed are, for the moment, targeted by lawsuits. Prosecutor Mary Carmack-Altwies also said in a statement “not knowing” at this stage of the investigation if “prosecution would be initiated”.
