After an extended period of planning and organizing the concept of a cooperative high school in the Paris community has become a reality, while at the same time has made history in the state of Illinois.
On July 1 an organizational meeting for the governing board of the newly formed Paris Cooperative High School was held in the high school library.
Following nominations and votes the following officers were elected to serve on the board: President - August Griffin; Vice-President - Doug Hasler; Secretary - Paul Porter; and Treasurer - Ron Doris.
In addition to officers elected, the board also approved Dave Meister as the director of the Paris Cooperative High School. This authorizes Meister to act as the official agent of the board.
The motion, made by President Griffin, stated that Meister be authorized to serve as the official agent of the board and represent the Cooperative High School on all official matters in accordance with board policy and the statutes of the state of Illinois. Meister will serve under the conditions of the contract agreed upon by the member districts (the remaining year of Meister’s administrative contract.)
The meeting dates and an agenda format were also set with the board scheduled to meet the second Monday of each month in the high school library at 5 p.m.
The monthly agenda format will include the following:
I. Call Meeting to Order
II. Roll Call
III. Audience to Visitors
IV. Consent Agenda
V. Secretary’s Report
VI. Administrative Report
VII Report of Committees
VIII. Public Hearings and Petitions
IX. Unfinished Business
X. Matters for Follow-Up
XI. New Business
XII. Right to Revert to Prior Order of Business
XIII. Executive Session
XIV. Adjournment
Also during the organizational meeting the board authorized the director (Meister) to establish the statutorily required parent-teacher advisory and behavioral intervention committees.

" I agree this is a great step... I just wish we could have merged the two districts into one and saved on all of the overhead. Maybe down the road that will become a reality. "

" Per GF's comment above.
As I understand this cooperative, it is between Paris and Crestwood. How does this cooperative represent all Edgar County taxpayers, families and school aged students? How is my child in Hume impacted by this action and board? "

" I think time and time again over the past few years that I've read about Paris and Crestwood wanting all of the schools in the area to consider consolidation, cooperatives, etc. Shiloh, Chrisman, Oakland, Kansas, and many others were invited to brainstorming sessions and informational meetings to discuss the options. Shiloh Raider your child was impacted because your school district chose not to pursue the options that were presented. "

" Shiloh Raider I see your point but as "How quickly they forget" makes the point that your students were represented when the respective elected board decided not to be involved...so you ask how are they impacted by this action...well sadly I say they will miss the opportunity for programs and educational opportunities that the other students in Edgar County will be afforded. " I'm sure those non participating schools are going to want to reap the benefits once this nice school is well established. "

" I graduated from Paris High School in 1975 and have been away from the area for almost all of this time in Arizona.
Isn't this whole action simply a plan to create a new high school in Paris for the Paris and Crestwood districts?
Why is a new school needed when enrollment today is down from when I was at PHS? Would it not be easier and less costly to remodel PHS to meet current needs instead of building something new?
I do admit that this is my first article I have read on the matter so I may be missing some very important information and understanding for the need of such a board and school, but from the comments above, I feel that people are turning their nose down on the existing school and have an attitude that newer will be better and "Nicer"
Unless the board has let PHS go down the drain, it was a very nice school in 1975. I would sure like to see students go to a school with great history and tradition rather than a new, sterile school with no appeal to students like the schools they build here in the Phoenix area, which look and feel like medium sized shopping malls.
In any event, if this board and school can provide better educational opportunities for the students being served and prepare them for the challanges of the future, I 100% support the effort. "
