The Paris Tigers scored 26 points in the fourth quarter to defeat the Salem Wildcats, 54-50, in Eveland Gymnasium Friday night. The win ends a four game losing streak for the Tigers and improves their record in the Apollo Conference to 2-3.

Paris scored nearly as much in the final period as they did in the first three combined. Defense ruled the first half, with Paris scoring only three points in the opening quarter while Salem recorded nine. The Tigers found some offense in the second quarter, and outscored Salem 15-10 to trail by one point at halftime.

There were eight lead changes in the exciting second half. Salem was leading 39-38 halfway through the fourth quarter, when Johnnie Dayton scored to give the Tigers a 40-39 lead. Aaron Robb answered for Salem by hitting a 3-pointer that retook the lead, but Paris took it right back when sophomore Dalten Temples hit a three of his own not even 10 seconds later.

Zeke Light scored his only two points of the game to give the Wildcats their last lead of the night. Light was averaging over 20 points a game, but the resurgent Paris defense kept him bottled up Friday.

With two minutes left in the game, Chase Brinkley stole the ball from a Salem guard and took it all the way back to give the Tigers a 45-44 lead. Before Salem could answer, Dayton stole the ball and broke down the court for another score, prompting a Salem timeout with 1:36 left on the clock and Paris up 47-44.

When play resumed, Paris got another stop on defense and Temples scored again to extend the Tigers’ lead to five points. Temples ended the night with 10 points, all of which came in the second half. Bryce Harris scored a foul shot on the other end for Salem, and then Zach Walls extended the Paris lead to 51-45 with 38 second left. Temples and Brinkley hit free throw in the final stretch to secure a 54-50 win.

“We had our best practice yesterday,” Paris head coach Terry Elston mentioned after the game. “We told our guys, ‘Hey, we are not being the aggressor out there. We are letting other teams be the aggressor. We can thank the Marshall Lions for that. We saw what the upper-echelon teams are doing and we’re trying to emulate that. We came out and I think we just ground it out and wore them down, and that’s why we were able to score 26 points in the fourth quarter. We wore them out. They were tired,” Elston continued. “We were rotating a lot of guys in and out, and they were all buying into their roles, all playing good defense and getting after it. Our defense won the game for us, and kept us in the game until our offense got rolling.”

Brinkley had 13 points in his second game back in the lineup for the Tigers. Dayton and Temples scored 10 points each, with both Paris guards hitting shots in key moments. Walls scored seven points, most of which came making athletic drives to the basket. Logan Henness added five points, while Zach Henn had four, Taylor Haddix had three and Jason Hollis scored two. Salem was led by juniors Bryce Harris and Dan Conklin, who scored 11 points each.

The Paris junior varsity also won while scoring more than 20 points in the fourth quarter. After trailing 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, the Paris JV outscored Salem 47-34 through the last three quarter to win 59-47.

Three JV Tigers scored in double digits. Ethan Mason led with 14 points, followed closely by Cory Cunningham with 13, and Clay Bess with 11. Josh Griffin nearly made it four players, scoring nine. Jordan Ball added six, Josh Cary had four and Hodgson scored two.

The Paris Tigers (7-6, 2-3 Apollo) travel to Mt. Zion Tuesday for an Apollo Conference game against the Braves. The varsity game is slated for 7:45 p.m.

“We’re going to go over there and give them our best shot,” Elston said of the Mt. Zion Braves. “If we play defense like that we can play with anyone in the Apollo.”
