Local 4-H recycling project ‘good for everybody’

The Edgar County 4-Her’s are working to help the environment, while earning extra funds for their program, with the help of Pam and Thad Arrasmith, of Draft Busters, a local “green” insulation company.

The Arrasmith’s learned of a recycling fundraiser program through Applegate Insulation, the insulation supplier used by Draft Busters and wanted to work with a local organization. Thad’s family has been involved in 4-H for three generations, so naturally it was his first choice.

The opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time for the 4-Her’s who have lost much of their state funding due to budget cuts.

“It’s a good program all around,” said Pam Arrasmith. “It helps the economy, it helps the community and it helps the environment. It’s good for everybody.”

On Saturday, Dec. 13, the Edgar County 4-H Clubs gathered at the 4-H building on Elliott Street for their first paper drive. Doug Smittkamp of Paris Transport donated a trailer for tempo-

rary use to store the paper products.

“Our hope was to fill a semi with 10 to 20 tons of paper by the end of January,” said Sue Kenderdine Edgar County 4-H Community Worker. “By January 1st our trailer was full.”

4-H members and their families will be collecting paper goods and cardboard again from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday (Jan. 10).

“We will continue collecting paper and cardboard every second and fourth Saturdays of each month at the fairgrounds,” said Kenderdine.

Applegate, Inc., who supplies Draft Busters with insulation will purchase the paper from the 4-H Federation to shred and make chemical free (green) insulation which Draft Busters, Inc. will use to insulate local homes and businesses in the Edgar County area.

In addition to the paper drives at the 4-H fairgrounds, Adam Cash, Keith, Brett and Braden Wilson and Sarah and Josh Kenderdine, with the help of Sue Kenderdine, have been collecting paper products from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturdays at the parking lot next to the Paris Police Station.

“Several local companies have jumped on board with this project by contacting us when they have recyclables that are ready to be collected,” said Kenderdine.

According to Kenderdine, each ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees, 225 kilowatt-hours of electricity and 60,000 gallons of water. Last year enough paper was recycled to fill 130 Empire State Buildings. Out of the 12,360,000 tons of newspaper discarded last year 88 percent was recycled which in turn caused a 45 percent reduction of energy used and prevented 2.5 tons of carbon emissions in the air.

“How do we begin to thank our community for making this dream a reality?” asked Kenderdine. “The outpouring of support has been phenomenal.  Our community is well known for supporting worthy causes and this is a cause that touches 300 4-H members and their families throughout Edgar County.”

The community is encouraged to drop off their recyclable paper from 9 a.m. to noon this Saturday at the Edgar County Fairgrounds.
