A short Truth in Taxation hearing was held Monday prior to the District 95 Board of Education meeting. No comments or questions were raised by the audience and the levy was approved during the regular meeting.

The Truth in Taxation hearing was necessary due to the fact the district asked for a 10 percent increase. When a district asks for more than five percent, a truth in taxation hearing is required.

Following the hearing, the regular business meeting commenced with the board approving retirement requests from Bill and Norma Williamson. The custodians both plan to retire as of Feb. 27, 2009. Norma has been with the district for 26 years and Bill for 22 years, superintendent Connie Sutton told the board.

The board also approved a resignation from Angie Propst as department chair at Paris High School and from Alison Wirth as the Drug Free Sponsor at Mayo Middle School, effective Dec. 20. Myndy Wooten will fill the Drug Free Sponsor position for the remainder of the year.

The district received several donations from the community. The Edgar County Clerk once again donated $200 to the Paris High School Construction Skills class for their assistance with the general election. The Mayo art program received a $3,250 anonymous donation and the Mayo library received $100 from the Noon Kiwanis Club to purchase books. Paris High School basketball coach Terry Elston donated his stipend of $5,125 back to the basketball account. According to Sutton, this is an annual contribution from Elston to the team.

“We appreciate all of these donations,” board member Ron Dorris said.

A fundraiser request was approved for Shannon Sherer and the Tiger Tales. Money raised will go toward printing costs and events for the high school newspaper.

A driver’s education waiver was approved for Amanda Melton.

Sutton was pleased to announce Dan Lynch was nominated for Indiana State University’s Influential Teacher Recognition Program. The nomination was made by former Paris High School student Shelby Calles.

The January board of education meeting will be changed to Jan. 12 due to the holidays.

" Does anyone know exactly why they asked for a 10 percent increase? Was it simply because uncontrollable cost have gone up by that amount or is there more behind the scenes? "
