The Paris Lady Tigers gave a talented Terre Haute South team all they could handle Thursday night in Eveland Gymnasium, but lost to the Lady Braves 61-47.
Paris trailed the Lady Braves 10-8 with 3:34 left in the first quarter, when Terre Haute South went on an 11-point run that ended with the Lady Tigers trailing 21-8 going into the second quarter. The early South scoring run gave them the edge they would need through the rest of the game. Paris recovered and kept pace with Lady Braves throughout the next three quarters, however were not able to overcome the early deficit. After the first quarter, Paris was only outscored by a point through the final three quarters, 40-39, against a team ranked fifth in Indiana.
Madison Martin stepped up for the Lady Tigers, scoring a team-high 17 points. A Martin 3-pointer capped a Paris surge early in the fourth quarter that had cut the South lead to eight points. The Lady Braves were able to hold onto their lead by hitting 12 of 16 foul shots in the fourth quarter.
Sarah Maggert was able to score 13 points for Paris, despite being defended by South’s 6’3” center, Dragana Grbic. Maggert showed her range as well, hitting a 3-pointer with two seconds left in the third quarter.
Paris had their hands full with South’s Tessa Johnson and Kristina Smith, who combined for 38 points. Grbic, who will be playing for Butler next year, was held to eight points and frustrated by the Lady Tigers’ defense.
“We kept it close with our shooting, but then we created some opportunities for them too,” Paris head coach Tom Punzelt said after the game. “I’m extremely proud of them all. It’s tough to lose, but I think our seniors obviously responded. We’ll look forward to opening up [the Apollo conference schedule] against a good Salem team a week from Tuesday down at Salem.”
Earlier in the night the junior varsity Lady Tigers continued their dominance with a 44-27 win over the Terre Haute South JV.
The Paris JV jumped out to a 12-8 lead in the first quarter, and continued to outscore South in the next three quarters before winning 44-27.
Allison Englum led Paris in scoring with 12 points, along with Michelle Collier, who scored 11. Englum also contributed with eight steals, while Collier had three. The team combined for 15 total steals in the game. Callie Keys pulled down eight rebounds for the Lady Tigers’ JV.
After tonight’s freshman/sophomore game at Effingham, the Lady Tigers will not play again until Tuesday, Dec. 2, when they travel to Salem. They will look to get get healthy and have some good practices in the meantime.
“We’ll have all hands on deck, once we get through this week” Punzelt said. “Salem is very good, very quick. They don’t present the size issue that South did, but they are extremely fast. In the last couple years, the score’s been very high, wether we won it or not.”
