Paris business provides special Hurricane Ike relief

Most of the hurricane relief effort in Texas is concentrating on human needs, but a Paris business is helping with the dogs and cats displaced by the massive storm.

Anthony and Kate Holloway, owners of K9Cuisine, left Paris Monday afternoon with approximately five tons of donated pet food to assist the Houston Society for the Prevention of the Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in its mission to care for the animals coming into the SPCA shelter. The Houston SPCA is coordinating the animal rescue efforts in Galveston and other hard hit areas.

Kate Holloway said the Internet based sales company contacted its customer list with an e-mailed request to buy a bag of food as a donation, and the company matched the response bag-for-bag.

“We had already contacted the Houston SPCA to let them know a shipment was coming in two weeks, but they called back and asked if we could make it sooner,” she said. “They are almost out of food.”

The news of the animals’ great need caused the Holloways and their employees to spring into action on Monday. Within a few hours, food was loaded onto skids, a truck rented and loaded and the Holloways departed.

“We’ll tag team drive all night in order to get there tomorrow,” Kate Holloway said.

She added it was not possible to make the shipment by other means because commercial carriers are not yet allowed into the devastated area. In fact, the SPCA had to arrange special authorization so the Holloways’ rental truck can enter Houston.

K9Cuisine at 501 West Court carries a wide variety of dog and cat food labels that are generally not found in grocery stores. Some of the foods are completely vegetarian, while others contain meat products.

According to Holloway, most of the brands are made in the Midwest, although one product line is imported from Canada. She noted a major difference between the products stocked by K9Cuisine and more familiar brand names is found at the manufacturing facilities.

Almost all of the company’s inventory is made in plants that are certified to produce human grade food and some facilities actually run pet food and human food product lines side-by-side. Such a precaution reduces the risk of tainted components entering the process as happened earlier this year when toxic material imported from China was used in some pet food brands.

The Holloways understand the shipment that left Paris on Monday is important relief but does not solve the continuing problem. The “Send a Bag” campaign will continue.

“There will be another truck going in two weeks,” promised Kate Holloway.
