" Wow, completely different schedule from 10-15 years ago. I've never even heard of a couple of those schools. All the old rivalries with our neighboring school districts of Marshall, Casey-Westfield, and Westville are gone. I will say, however, that I do not miss seeing Highland or some other big, far-away, school on the end of that schedule... unless that's what Trenton Wesclin is? "

" This is in response to PHS FB Alum. You make a very good and interesting point that only the current school administor could respond to. As a current parent we ask these questions on a regular basis. First off, just because you don't see Highland on the schedule doesn't mean that PHS is not playing teams that are insanely far away.

Clifton is a school close to Kankakee Illinois. It is 2 hours and 7 minutes away from Paris. The school has an enrollment according to IHSA of 397 students. The night of this game Paris took 3 buses. I'm not sure that the gas money and staff was well spent for this trip. Can't we find something closer?

Also, the end of the year Paris plays Trenton Wesclin. If you are unfamiliar with this school it is locatied close to St. Louis. Another 2+ hour drive (but this year they will come here to play). Trenton has an enrollment of 427 kids.

In 2005-2006 the farthest distance that PHS travelled was Newton. In 06-07 the farthest was Salem. Those are Apollo conference teams that need to be played. For a school with an enrollment of 613 again you'd think that we could play someone more local and still be competitive. It seems as though there was a school within 30 minutes that made it to the state tournament in football last year.

I'd say the days of close rivals and many students going to away games to support their team is few and far between. Who wants to let their kid drive 2+ hours to an away game for school spirit? Plus they would never make it home before they new 11 pm curfew. We just lose a lot by allowing a very short season to be filled with only 4 home games and several away games that take over an hour to get to.

When gas reaches $7.00 a gallon maybe they'll reconsider. "
