The Mayo Lady Redbirds won their first game of the year at the expense of the Crestwood Eagles Thursday, 13-9.
Mayo, the “visiting” team for the cross-town rivalry, got off to a good start in the first inning. The Lady Redbirds capitalized on a walk, two hit batters and two errors to score five runs, and then had a 1-2-3 inning in the field against Crestwood’s top of the order. Mayo scored three more in the top of the second thanks in part to a bizarre play, where Megan Temples caught the Eagles sleeping after she was walked.
Temples started to sprint and was turning first base before the Crestwood fielders realized what was happening. A few hurried throws later, Megan, and teammate Cayla Hoffman, came home to score on errors. Suddenly, with the a 8-0 lead, it looked like Mayo was going to run away with the game.
The Eagles weren’t going to let the Lady Redbirds off that easy.
With the help of some Mayo miscues, Crestwood used singles from Kelsey Fuqua and Tatum Trego to score three runs in the bottom of the second inning to start cutting into the Redbird’s lead. Meanwhile, the Eagles’ defense settled in and sat Mayo batters down in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Crestwood scored two more runs in the third inning and tied the game at 8-8 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
The Crestwood defense, that had played so well in the three previous frames, broke down in the sixth inning. Six errors led to four runs for the Lady Redbirds. The Lady Redbirds’ dugout erupted into a din, as Chelsea Allen, Madeline Wilson, Christina Hoffman and Frankie Rios all crossed the plate for a 12-8 Mayo lead.
Both Paris teams added a run each in the final inning, as the Lady Redbirds survived a mid-game rally by the Crestwood Eagles to win 13-9.
Mayo’s 13 runs on just two hits and two RBIs is the most startling indicator of how wild the game was. Crestwood actually out-hit the Lady Redbirds 10 to two. Both teams committed seven or more errors in the contest.
Fuqua scored three of Crestwood’s runs and Trego scored two runs on a 2-4 day at the plate.
Cayla Hoffman went 2-4 with a run for Mayo. Brianne “Nanners” Hodgson and Brooke Keller had one RBI each.
The Crestwood Eagles (0-5) will travel to Effingham St. Anthony today (Friday) for a 4 p.m. game. The Mayo Lady Redbirds (1-5) will be in Effingham Saturday for an 11 a.m. game against St. Anthony.
