Metcalf to celebrate anniversary

METCALF – Organizers of the upcoming Metcalf Park Day hope to accomplish two things.
One goal is to revitalize community spirit. The village had a small one-day festival for several years but it fell away when too few volunteers were available to handle the work.
“We had a few people tell Kathy Alligood they would like to see something in town again,” said Sue English, who is helping plan the event. “Kathy started knocking on doors and it went from there.”
The other purpose of the event is to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Metcalf Fire Protection District.
“We were going to have an open house, but we decided to combine and do the open house in the park,” said Herman Weddle, president of the fire protection trustees.
Park Day promises fun, food and entertainment on Saturday, June 28.
Activities start at 3 p.m. with bingo, organized children’s games and a food booth by the Metcalf Christian Church. The children’s games last until 5 p.m., and the bingo play concludes at 6:30 p.m.
A special Fireman History program is set for 5 p.m., and that is followed by the Little Mister and Miss Metcalf contest at 6 p.m.
Free live music starts at 6:15 p.m. with the “Area wide Band” followed at 7 p.m. by “Runnin’ on Empty.”
English said the hope is the Park Day brings the community together to create an ongoing festival that can be expanded with more attractions and vendors in the coming years.
“We’re just starting out small,” said English.
